There are niches for hockey in other places throughout eastern and central Europe such as Germany, Switzerland, Latvia and Belarus. Places with Russian influence also tend to like hockey. It starts with our weather, which is cold for much of the year and conducive to winter sports. It’s on TV all the time, everyone talks about it at work, as Canadians we take pride at being the best in the world at the sport, our best athletes dedicate themselves to the sport, and that feeds on itself in a virtuous cycle.
